Jenni's Review (female, non biased reviewer who hopes she never gets a beard)

I really enjoyed watching and reviewing ‘This is The Sea Two’.

Filmed in a down to earth style, with a funky, coastal chill style soundtrack, it is an excellent documentary to inspire both men and women paddlers to do more of what we all love doing, paddling in a host of stunning locations.

The friends involved with Justine were a broad range of characters, each sharing what paddling means to them, which everyone I’m sure all could relate to on one level or another.

Being a woman I was particularly inspired by the circumnavigation of Japan involving Hadas Feldman and Jeff Allen. It gave me real pause to think, “Hey if she did that, why couldn’t I one day.” By the time the DVD got to the first all female circumnavigation of Tasmania by Justine and two of her mates, I was ready to start packing up the charts and the kayak.

The unique camera angles put you in the seat with the paddler, giving you the feel of really being ‘out there’ in the kayak. The raw emotion of the paddler is not only seen, but felt in these well positioned shots. Justine’s famous ‘cackle’ on which her company name is based on is just infectious.

A brilliant DVD for imparting a wonderful sense of get out and have fun, spend more time you’re your mates, and definitely look outside the square your paddling in.

Wayne's Review (male, extremely biased reviewer who used to have a grey beard)

I watch a lot of paddling DVDs, read a lot of paddling books, magazines and articles and know many friends who reckon I need more balance in life. With DVD's like this, who needs balance - paddling is all there is really.

"This is the Sea Two" continues along the same lines as "This is the Sea One" except there is more action on the water, even better paddling locations (if that is possible) and the same light hearted dig at the "Old men of the sea with beards". You won't find paddling on ponds in this DVD, it is all surfing, jumping, nose standing, pirouetting and bashing through waves - the stuff normally associated more with white water films.

The sound track is simply excellent and I reckon after you get the DVD you will be spending some time looking at the web sites of the bands listed. The cackle of Justine and her friends on the water while they do their version of on water dancing gives a light hearted fun feel to the filming and really shows off what can be done with sea kayaks.

Inspiring? The word does not do the film justice. The clever angles of the kayak camera shots put us in the seat of the kayak with the paddlers! If someone had thrown a bucket of cold water in my face while I was watching the video I would simply have reached out to brace against the lounge chair!

Watch this DVD, and I gaurantee that it won't be the last or the tenth time you view it. In fact, I would suggest looking into getting a hookup onto your kayak so you can watch the DVD while getting out there in the surf and waves yourself. Then you get the best of both worlds!

For all you old grey beards and male testesterone types out there, beware the ladies of hard core paddling have arrived. I suggest you shave off that facial hair and get to know a few more female paddlers - there are definite lessons to be learned and fun on the water to be had.

Rating (see below for explaination)
This particular DVD gets four different ratings:
  • first for film quality, locations, action and paddling sequences
  • second for the music
  • third for just being fun
  • fourth for if it is worth buying

Wayne's Rating System:

- avoid at all costs
- it might not hurt to go out paddling instead
- a good read or watch, especially if you borrowed it from a mate with the intention of returning in 30 years
- worth owning, beware of mates borrowing it and not returning it for 30 years
- definitely buy this, read or watch it and forget about going paddling for the day

Disclaimer - the above rating system is extremely subjective, open to extreme bias most of the time but quite often correct anyways.
